The origins of Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT) trace back to NASA’s research in the 1980s when it was explored as a way to support astronaut health and recovery following space missions. While LLLT operates using the same biological mechanisms and light wavelengths as low-level laser therapy, it relies on LED technology rather than lasers. This distinction allows LED-based devices to be used safely at home for extended periods without the need for clinical supervision.

LLLT delivers energy through multiple light wavelengths simultaneously, allowing it to interact with biological tissues at varying depths. Current research indicates that this therapy may help decrease muscle inflammation by modulating inflammatory pathways and reducing markers such as interleukin-6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein. Additionally, the photobiomodulation effects of LLLT on body tissues have been shown to calm neuroinflammatory responses by limiting microglial and astrocyte activation, which may help alleviate neuropathic pain associated with spinal cord injuries.
